ITSM platform
Also called: ITSM tool · IT service management platform · service desk software
The software that runs IT service management — portal, catalogue, incidents, requests, changes, assets, CMDB, knowledge and service levels — as one operation.
An ITSM platform is the software on which an IT organization runs its service management: the self-service portal and catalogue, incident and request handling, change and problem management, the asset inventory and the CMDB, the knowledge base, and the service levels that time all of it. Gartner reopened its Magic Quadrant for ITSM Platforms in 2026; QKS Group evaluates IT service management platforms; the market is one of the most shortlisted in enterprise software.
Two structural questions distinguish platforms that otherwise read alike. First, what verifies the processes: vendor claims, or an external scheme such as PinkVERIFY that assesses each process against published criteria. Second, what sits underneath: a ticketing core purpose-built for IT — which struggles the day a process stops looking like a ticket — or a general process engine on which ITSM is one set of processes among many, which extends to enterprise services and business processes by configuration.
