Bottleneck

The point in a process where available capacity limits overall throughput, producing waiting and case build-up. Process mining locates them on real trajectories rather than inferring them from perception.

Improving any other point in the process does not move the overall result, and that is the counterintuitive part. Improvement initiatives that fail to identify it first tend to produce faster stretches and the same end-to-end time.
