Process intelligence platform

Also called: process intelligence

A platform that mines, analyses, models and monitors processes from the event data real systems already produce.

A process intelligence platform combines discovery and analysis tools with modelling and monitoring: it extracts event data from the systems where work actually happens, discovers the processes as they really run, checks conformance against the designed models, and quantifies bottlenecks, rework and cycle times. Gartner evaluates the market as process intelligence platforms; Forrester uses process intelligence; the defining capability, under any name, is process mining over event logs — including logs from systems the platform does not itself run.

The distinction worth keeping when reading vendor claims: analysing the execution of processes a platform runs itself is valuable — the event log is native, complete and trustworthy — but it is not the same capability as discovering processes from the logs of ERPs, CRMs and legacy systems the platform never touched. The category is defined by the second. A vendor that does the first honestly names it execution analytics and exports its native event log to the mining tool of the buyer's choice.
