Performing the same activities as competitors, but better. It is distinct from strategy, which means doing different things or doing them differently, and on its own it does not sustain a differentiated position.
The distinction matters when deciding where to automate. Improving the efficiency of an activity every competitor performs identically creates no advantage: it merely avoids losing ground. Advantage comes from doing different things, not the same things better.
