Goal-Question-Metric

Also called: GQM

A disciplined procedure for deriving indicators: from each goal one derives questions that characterize its fulfilment, and from each question metrics that answer it with data.

A disciplined procedure for deriving indicators: from each goal one derives questions that characterize its fulfilment, and from each question metrics that answer it with data. It prevents metrics that exist merely because the data happened to be available.

Its value is that it inverts the usual order. Most dashboards grow out of whatever data is available; GQM starts from the goal, derives the questions and only then looks for the metric — which is why it leaves orphan metrics out.
