Historisation

The preservation of how a data item changes over time, so its value at any past moment can be reconstructed. It is a requirement for audit, root-cause analysis and trend evaluation.

It separates a system that knows how things are from one that knows how they were. For any audited organization the second question is the expensive one: reconstructing the state as of the date of the event, not the date of the query.
