Enterprise architecture tools

Also called: EA tools · EA management suites

Software that captures the relationships among capabilities, processes, applications, information and technology, so architecture decisions can be analysed rather than argued.

Enterprise architecture tools capture the entities of an organization's architecture — capabilities, processes, applications, information, roles, technology — and, crucially, the relationships and interdependencies among them, in a repository that supports modelling, analysis and publication. Gartner evaluates the market under this name; Forrester has used enterprise architecture management suites. The buyer is usually the head of enterprise architecture, and the classic use cases are impact analysis, rationalisation and transformation planning.

The category's chronic weakness is drift: the repository describes the organization, the organization changes, and nobody updates the model. That is why the market's own evolution points toward the digital twin of an organization — models fed by operational data — and why the sharpest question to ask any EA tool is what mechanism keeps its model true. A repository whose objects are also the executed operation answers it structurally; one that depends on architects' diligence answers it with hope.
